Adjusting Your Library Floor Plan for Social Distancing

As libraries adjust to the “new normal” one thing is clear, they will all have to make some modifications to move forward. These changes may be as small as putting out bottles of hand sanitizer next to any “high touch” spaces. These adjustments may be as large as changing up the layout of your library to ensure compliance with local social distancing rules. You will want to keep both your staff and your patrons safe. Safety is important in these changing times. You will want to keep everyone healthy so they can keep returning time and time again.

Step One: Create a New Floor Plan

Your new floor plan should allow patrons and employees to move about the space without bumping into one another. Ideally, everyone should be able to keep at least 6 feet of distance between themselves and any other patron. You will want to place adequate signage outside of, inside of, and around the library to let patrons know the new expectations.

We suggest moving tables farther apart throughout the library. This will likely require removing some tables for the time being. You will want to store the tables that are not being used safely away from the public. You may want to repurpose your smaller meeting room spaces to make them table and chair storage for now.  The chairs that are not in use can safely stack on transporters to be stored away in  the new social distancing floor plan. Libraries can place temporary partitions or guards between the remaining tables in their new configuration to provide an additional layer of protection.

How Can Stacking Chairs Help?

Stacking chairs make it easy to re-configure and re-imagine your spaces with minimal staff on hand. When your chairs can stack up to ten chairs high, you can quickly move the chairs for the changing times. Stacking wooden chairs allow your staff to safely store your chairs. When it comes time to purchase stacking library chairs, quality is just as important as style.
