Fred and William Eustis
|
Eustis Enterprises, Inc. was started in 1989 in Ashburnham, Massachusetts, by William E. C. Eustis. At age 69, this was Bill's fourth entrepreneurial venture, and his third in the wood products industry. Joined in 1993 by his son, Fred, they soon found themselves building top-quality dining chairs for one of America's most demanding furniture manufacturers. The company developed a reputation for craftsmanship and customer satisfaction, and that reputation led to a contract to build 650 antique reproduction chairs for Harvard University's renovation of Memorial Hall. The success of that project led to further chair contracts, and a new business concept began to develop. At about this time, Fred purchased the business from his father, with a commitment that Bill would stay on for several years as a member of the Board of Advisors.

Robert H. Eustis
|
Eustis Designs, Inc. was started in 1990 in Palo Alto, California, by Professor Robert H. Eustis. At age 70, Bob had recently retired from a distinguished Engineering career at Stanford University, and set out to apply his insights to the tradition-bound area of furniture manufacturing. He soon developed a method of joining two pieces of wood using concealed steel rods and aerospace-grade epoxies. This technique, for which he was awarded a patent in 1997, allowed Eustis Designs to build hundreds of elegant chairs for universities and libraries throughout California without a single joint failure. Fred learned of the existence of Eustis Designs in early 1999, and saw the great potential of Bob's patented joint to his new business concept. 18 months later, Eustis Enterprises acquired the patent rights to the technology we now call the Eustis JointŪ
Eustis Chair is the trade name we now use for the business that emerged in the new millennium. All non-chair manufacturing was eliminated, and the new company began to create a line of elegant hardwood chairs that are engineered to withstand decades of abuse in busy libraries and university dining halls. From 2000 to 2005, Eustis Chair added over 25 new chair designs, and completed over 50 projects for public libraries and universities, more than half of which were Eustis JointŪ chairs. More and more architects, designers, and institutional buyers are beginning to recognize the Eustis Chair name, and to know that it stands for distinctive hardwood chairs that truly meet the test of time.
And yes, Fred, Bill, and Bob Eustis are related; they are 7th cousins, direct descendants of William Eustis, born in 1661 in what is now Chelsea, Massachusetts.
